yek koo means ‘one mountain’ in Farsi – one element, one entity, one flat tire, one doughnut, one wrong turn, one tree, one rainfall, one lost number, one place, one piece of paper, one broken toy, one nail, one hand, one tear, one crumb, one piece of tape - one anything that can transform one thing into something else entirely.  And that one new thing can again enter the cyclical nature of the game until another single something comes along and stretches out its tentacles.

helga fassonaki’s recent solo project, yek koo, nurtures a  process that endeavours to be nothing more than a process of self-regulation that remains in perpetual fantasy until disrupted, deteriorated, distracted, or altered by ‘a one’. The compositions may already begin as broken or eradicated sounds that proceed by collapsing into heavy drones.

<Allowing worms to composite vegetable waste creates a loop while taking away the waste may break it>

yek koo noises may be composed with, but not limited to a santur (persian dulcimer), persian setar (sehtar), electronic tape/growth machines, prepared laptop, ebow, child toys, and melodica.

on one mountain I sit howling softly, receiving in response a thousand loud echoes~
